Tonga’s volcano eruption caused the highest plume in recorded history

Tonga’s volcano eruption in January 2022 is still being examined in satellite images. The volcano produced the highest plume, breaking through the mesosphere layer for the first time in recorded history. The plume reached an altitude of 57 km at its peak, and the mesosphere layer starts at 50 km.
