Tardigrades, also known as water bears, are very resilient creatures and can survive out of space vacuum, freezing temperature, and extreme dryness. When tardigrades go through dryness, they slow their metabolism so much that they can withstand having only 3% water in their bodies for a decade. Researchers found the proteins CHAS, existing only in tardigrades, form a special gell membrane to protect the cell from collapsing when it is nearly dry.
