The Ötzi is a body of a man preserved in ice, found in the northern Italy Alps (by the Austrian border). It is estimated that the man died, probably a violent death, around 3200 BC. The body has been kept under ice for about 5,000 years, making it the oldest find of its kind in Europe. The preservation of the body is phenomenal in terms of soft tissue, internal organs, clothing and skeleton, which can even be determined as the cause of death: an arrow injury.
The Ötzi man was found in 1991 by a pair of hikers, who initially thought it was another hiker who was injured in an accident. Later, by using Radiocarbon dating, the exact age of the body was determined. Utzi’s height, about 1.65 Meter and his weight was about 50 kg. His age is estimated at 45.
The Ötzi man also had some rare biological traits: he carries 11 pairs of ribs (instead of 12 as in other humans), and has no wisdom teeth. He had black hair and a beard, and he was carrying an ax. His shoes are made of bear and deer leather and he carried in a small backpack dried mushrooms and fruits.
