The Sonoran desert toad’s defense mechanism is the secretion of a poison that contains 5-MeO-DMT, lethal enough to kill an adult dog and to cause an intense psychedelic experience that lasts between 15 – 30 minutes for humans. Smoking the toad’s poison became a growing “Shamanic business” that threatens the toad’s existence. In California, Sonoran desert toads are completely extinct, while in other Southern states and in Mexico it is critically endangered.
