Elephant seals can sleep and dive simultaneously

Elephant seals can travel for 7-8 months on the high seas, far away from land. In order to get some sleep they developed the ability to dive for some sleep –  they stay for a few minutes on the surface then go for a 30-minute dive, and when they are deep enough to avoid predators they take a 10-minute nap while holding their breath.
